Pip, Pip
It's hard to grow an avocado, especially in this country, but this is a great way to observe what happens to seeds when they're in the ground.
For this project you will need:
avocado
toothpicks
glass of water
pot with compost (soil)

It's hard to grow an avocado, especially in this country, but this is a great way to observe what happens to seeds when they're in the ground.

avocado
toothpicks
glass of water

Eat a delicious avocado and stick three toothpicks into the avocado pip at intervals around the middle.
Use the sticks to suspend the pip over a glass of water, pointy end up. Make sure the bottom of the pip always touches the water.
Wait a few weeks until the roots and stem begin to grow, then plant your pip in a pot containing damp potting compost, leaving half the pip exposed, and put your avocado plant in a sunny spot on a windowsill.
When the stem is 20cm high prune it to halfway down to encourage leafy growth.
Wait 13 years and your plant may produce some avocados!
Please make sure you ask a responsible adult to help you.
