Eat It Toffee Apples

This is a real autumnal fairground treat – and a great way to use apples which are in season now. Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without toffee apples. They’re great fun to eat (watch out for the fillings in your teeth though!) but cooking up molten sugar is a job for the grown-ups.

Ingredients
6 eating apples
10 heaped tablespoons (225g) of
Demerara sugar
110ml water
½ teaspoon of white vinegar
2 tablespoons of golden syrup
1 knob 3cm square (25g) of butter
Also you’ll need 6 wooden skewers or
ice-lolly sticks

01Put the sugar and water in a small saucepan and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
02Stir in the vinegar, syrup and butter and boil without stirring for about 10 minutes or until drops harden when dripped into cold water.
03Push a stick into each apple and once the coating is ready, dip apple into the toffee until the apple is completely coated.
04Leave to harden on an oiled surface, and then you can get crunching!
