In May you’ll be able to harvest radishes and salad that you planted back in early April. Now’s also the time to get more things in the ground, ready for a feast later in the summer...
If you have a greenhouse or polytunnel, indoor cucumber plants and tomatoes can now go in their growing containers. You can also plant courgettes straight into containers outside.

You can sow all this straight into the ground in May:
- French beans - quick maturing varieties should be ready to pick in June. Put plastic bottle cloches over the small plants.
- Sweetcorn if you live in the South
- Runner beans, when there’s no danger of frost
- More lettuce and salads
- Radishes
- In late May, sow beetroot seeds that you’ll be able
to lift in October
- Outdoor tomato plants

- Earth up new potatoes – when the shoots are 20cm tall, mound up soil around the stems to prevent your spuds going green
- Give strawberry plants or other a high potash feed
- Remove strawberry runners to keep plants strong
- Put in support peas and beans
- Keep hoeing, watering and weeding!
