In the garden

It’s chilly now, but there’s plenty to do to make sure things hot up in the spring

Sowing
You can sow broad beans and peas for a spring crop this month. Make sure you chose the hardy varieties though

You can also sow winter lettuce and corn salad, but both may need protecting from frost with a cloche or some fleece.

Harvest
Now’s the time to dig up and store any Brussels sprouts and any root vegetables remaining in the ground – unless you’re growing potatoes especially to unearth for your Christmas lunch.

Jobs
At this time of year you’ve got to show your soil some love! The growing beds will appreciate protection from the winter weather. If you aren’t growing green manure, a layer of good old-fashioned farmyard muck is great. Just as good is a blanket of fallen leaves – so don’t let the school groundsman burn them! Put the leaves on the beds and they will have enriched your soil before you start sowing in the spring.

Later in the month you can start pruning – or planting – fruit trees.
